French Old Fashioned

We wrote the following post on Paris before the horrible attacks last week. Paris is one of our favorite cities in the world, and we have no doubt it will bounce back stronger than ever. We express our deepest condolences to all those impacted by the tragedy.

This French Old Fashioned puts an elegant twist on a classic cocktail. It is simple to make but looks sophisticated, making it perfect for your next party!

There is perhaps no better city in the world for getting a drink than Paris. The image of Parisians drinking the afternoon away at a café (after putting in a solid 4.5 hour work day) is ubiquitous. While the drink most associated with Paris is wine, it is also an excellent city for cocktails. The book  “Paris Cocktails” by Doni Belau, creator of the popular site Girls Guide to Paris, is a great reference for learning about the Paris cocktail scene – it features everything from recipes for traditional and exotic French drinks to recommendations for the best spot to grab a drink in each arrondissement, and even has great ideas for Francophile bars here in the US. Feeling inspired by all of these Parisian cocktails, I made a whiskey-based French Old Fashioned. It puts a fun French twist on an American classic….

Septime – Paris

A review of the restaurant Septime in Paris, France-one of our favorite restaurants in the world. Amazing food, perfect service, and a rustic yet refined setting.

On our most recent trip to Paris, Cate and I were lucky enough to snag reservations at four of the hottest restaurants in town: Chateaubriand, Septime, Frenchie, and 6 Paul Bert.  All four were unique experiences and each is worthy of a visit while in Paris.  But if we had to pick a favorite, it would be Septime.  This was actually our second dinner at Septime – Cate and I went for the first time on our last trip to Paris and loved it so much we had to go back.  And it was just as amazing as we remembered.

Madrid, Spain | ChezCateyLou.com

Last November Cate and I took a two week trip to Madrid, Marrakech and Paris. I must admit – I am surprised at how much I loved my time in Madrid. Perhaps because it’s not as exotic as Marrakech nor as familiar as Paris, Madrid took a slight backseat in the planning process. However, the city quickly became one of my favorites, as I was taken in by the beautiful architecture, sunny weather and incredible food (it was mostly the food). Below are a few of our favorites from Madrid and some great travel tips.

Aero Whiskey Sour {& a Giveaway!}

This Aero Whiskey Sour elevates a classic whiskey sour by adding egg white, which gives the cocktail a silky texture and a great foamy top, and finishing with a touch of cinnamon.

Despite having a reputation as a bit of an old-fashioned drink (not to be confused with an Old Fashioned drink), I’ve always had a soft spot for whiskey sours. During my summer breaks during college and law school (aka my formative drinking years), my friends and I spent many nights at the Jersey Shore (no, not that Jersey Shore, ugh, this one) kicking back and enjoying some whiskey sours before partaking in our usual shenanigans. One of my friends had an ‘old family recipe’ for whiskey sours, and though it wasn’t much more than combining bottom-shelf whiskey with juice concentrate (in a Gatorade cooler no less), it always hit the spot.

Fast forward 5-10 years, and while I no longer drink from Gatorade coolers (usually…), I still enjoy drinking whiskey sours, particularly this Aero Whisky Sour.
