Peanut butter frosting is spread all over a baked chocolate donut, resulting in the most amazing breakfast ever! Sweet & salty and totally delicious!
Ohh it is a good morning at Chez CateyLou. A great morning in fact. And that is because I have the best donuts I have made thus far to share with you. That’s right, the best. And I have made a lot of donuts since I bought my little pan back in the fall. The name says it all – chocolate donuts with peanut butter frosting.
If you are a chocolate peanut butter lover, then you are going to agree that these donuts are insanely delicious! And also that they really are dessert and not breakfast. But anything goes on Saturday mornings in our house.
So why are these the best? Peanut butter frosting spread all over a baked chocolate donut – need I say more? These are literally TheBetterHalf’s dream come true. He is the world’s biggest chocolate peanut butter fan, and has been begging me to make a donut with peanut butter frosting for months now. And I finally (happily) obliged. Luckily, these lived up to his standards.
They are seriously SO good. A moist and chocolatey baked donut is topped with sweet and creamy peanut butter frosting. The frosting has a touch of salt in it for that addicting sweet and salty taste. And then the topping game begins, which is so much fun! As a choco pb lover, I happen to have tons of peanut butter goodies on hand at all times (mini reese’s, reese’s pieces, peanut butter chips…), so I went crazy decorating these! But if you don’t have a ton of pb accessories, you can use sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, or even leave these plain. They will still taste amazing.
In addition to tasting absolutely amazing, these donuts will instantly put you in a good mood. I mean just look at these chocolate donuts with peanut butter frosting and try not to smile. I don’t think it is possible! They are so fun and happy!
I will say that these are rich! If they are actually breakfast rather than dessert is definitely debatable. But I think that all donuts are really just cupcakes disguised as breakfast. These just happen to be extra rich cupcakes (thanks to the peanut butter frosting) disguised as breakfast. Nothing wrong with that. Because really, what are weekend mornings for? Indulging a little bit and relaxing. Then you can workout later 🙂

Ingredients
- 1 cup flour (4 1/4 oz)
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder (3 oz)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (3 3/4 oz)
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 Tablespoons Greek yogurt
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips (optional)
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter (4 3/4 oz)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (4 oz)
- 3-4 tablespoons milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease 2 donut pans with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk together butter, brown sugar, and egg until well combined and no lumps remain. Add buttermilk and yogurt, and whisk until well incorporated. Stir in the vanilla.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, and mix until just combined (do not over mix). Fold in mini chocolate chips (if using).
- Spoon the batter into donut pans, filling 2/3 way full. Bake for 5 - 7 minutes. Cool in pans for 2 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Heat the peanut butter in the microwave for about 20 seconds, until slightly melted. Whisk in powdered sugar and milk. Continue whisking until frosting is smooth, adding more milk if necessary.
- Using an offset spatula or butter knife, spread frosting on each donut. Top as desired (sprinkles, chopped Reese's peanut butter cups, mini chocolate chips, etc)

I saw these donuts mentioned on my friend, Allie’s, website. I live in Egypt and have trouble getting buttermilk (as well as Greek yogurt). Can this portion be modified. These donuts look great and I would love to make them!
