There is absolutely no oil or butter in this Skinny Chocolate Cake, but you wouldn’t know it! Greek Yogurt helps it stay rich and moist – you won’t miss the fat!
It is no secret that I love baking with yogurt (see here, here, and here). Yogurt can replace most or all of the fat in a lot of recipes while still giving you moist and tender baked goods. It allows me to make “skinny” recipes that taste (almost) as good as the real thing! The nice people at Chobani sent me a bunch of yogurt to try out in recipes (thank you!), so of course the first thing I made had chocolate in it! Skinny Chocolate Cake to be exact. The original recipe calls them fudgy brownies – I think the texture is more like a cake, but call them whatever you want – this chocolate creation is delicious! And it was so quick and easy to make. There is absolutely no oil or butter – ½ cup of Chobani and one egg does the job instead. The cake is so moist and fudgy . It is perfect on its own, sprinkled with powdered sugar, or served warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream!
There is absolutely no oil or butter in this Skinny Chocolate Cake, but you wouldn't know it! Greek Yogurt helps it stay rich and moist - you won't miss the fat!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 cup unsweetened baking cocoa
- 1/2 cup plain Greek Yogurt (I used Chobani)
- 1 egg
- 2 Tbsp milk (I used almond milk)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray an 8x8inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugrs, salt, baking soda, and cocoa.
- In a small bowl, whisk together yogurt, egg, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in mini chocolate chips.
- Spread batter into prepared baking dish and bake for 20 - 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. This cake is very moist and fudgy - do not overbake. It will set as it cools. Allow to cool before cutting into pieces.

I MADE THIS WITH HOMEMADE YOGURT. IT WAS MORE LICUID THAN GREEK YOGURT. INSTEAD OF ADDING 2T OF MILK I ADDED 2T MORE OF THE YOGURT. THE CAKE WAS FANTASTIC AND EASY.

Hi Linda – I’m so glad you liked it! Your substitutions sound perfect!

This might be a strange question, but what kind of cocoa powder do you use? Is it a special dark variety? I’m obsessed with the rich, dark color of your chocolate baked goods, but haven’t yet managed to replicate it!

Trying this tonight so fingers crossed, forgot I had no eggs though so have left them out and well see what happens 🙂

I actually increased the baking powder amount & got a more cakey finish & a less brownie type of result. Aslo I don’t bother with the icing sugar unless it is going to be eaten immediately as it just soaks in & makes it sticky. Works well frozen in individual containers/snap lock bags & then can go straight into lunch boxes from the freezer, the kids love it!
Cate says
Thanks for the comment, Fiona! I’m so glad the kids love it, and that is a great substitution idea!

This cake tasted great! I love the fact that it’s made with yogurt so less fattening.I decorated the top using Wilton red sparkle gel (couple of squiggly lines) and added fresh raspberries too. Will definitely make this cake again!
