Light and fluffy baked vanilla donuts are topped with vanilla icing and decorated with berries to make American Flag Donuts – the perfect way to celebrate July 4th!
We are coming up on a holiday – July 4th! And it wouldn’t be a holiday Chez CateyLou without a festive donut recipe!! It has kind of become my thing. I celebrate holidays by creating donuts. Christmas. Valentine’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day. Easter. And now, American Flag Donuts for July 4th!!
And speaking of the 4th of July, have you seen my Red, White, and Blue Smoothie, and more importantly have you entered the Chobani Giveaway?? Β It ends on July 4th and you definitely want to win this one!
The base of my festive donut is a light and fluffy baked vanilla donut. If you want to skip the decorating and just make this vanilla donut, I won’t mind. I ate one plain right out of the oven – it was so good! Yogurt is one of the secrets to keeping the donut super moist and light. The other tips are not over mixing the batter, and not over baking the donuts. Β In baking, I always err on the side of underbaking!
Then the donut is topped with a basic vanilla frosting. I added a little butter to it so that it would be a bit thicker than a typical donut glaze – I needed some “icing glue” to get my decorations to stick!
And then finally, the fun part – the berries! I cut strawberries in thin strips for the stripes on the flag, and then used blueberries for the stars. Yes, I’m aware that the stars on the actual American Flag are white – but you get the idea! I love the berries with the vanilla donut, and it makes this donut perfect for the summertime, when the berries are so fresh and delicious!
I hope everyone has a fun and relaxing holiday weekend! Β I know that I can’t wait for a few days off!
Light and fluffy baked vanilla donuts are topped with vanilla icing and decorated with berries to make American Flag Donuts - the perfect way to celebrate July 4th!
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 Tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup milk (any kind)
- 1/4 cup vanilla yogurt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 Tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
- pinch salt
- 2 - 3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
- 6 large strawberries, cut into strips
- 1/2 cup blueberries
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Lightly spray 2 donut pans with nonstick spray.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, egg, milk, yogurt, and vanilla.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined - do not over mix.
- Spoon the batter into the donut pan, filling each cavity about half full.
- Bake for 6 - 8 minutes. The donuts should spring back when lightly touched, but they will not be brown. Do not over bake.
- Remove from oven. Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for one minute, then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Whisk together powdered sugar, butter, vanilla, salt and 1 T heavy cream/milk. Keep adding cream/milk until desired consistency is reached - you want the icing to be slightly thick so that the berries will stick. Cover each donut with a light coating of icing.
- Place the strawberries and blueberries on the donut in the shape of a flag, as pictured.
