Brown Butter Easter Blondies

April 17, 2014 by Cate 37 Comments

These soft and chewy blondies have the most amazing flavor thanks to brown butter. They are full of candy coated chocolate eggs, making them the perfect treat for Easter!

I almost didn’t post these Easter blondies. I really don’t love the pictures, so figured that I shouldn’t put them up. And then I started thinking about the blondies. And how delicious they were. And how the two of us finished the whole pan in about two days. And I realized it would be a shame if I didn’t give you the recipe! Plus – they use my absolute favorite Easter candy, and I have to tell you all about that. So here they are – Brown Butter Easter Blondies. They might be a little ugly in the pictures, but they sure taste amazing!

So, my favorite Easter candy is Hershey’s Candy Coated Milk Chocolate Eggs – NOT to be confused with robin’s eggs whoppers – those I despise. These are basically like giant M&M’s. I really don’t know why these are my favorite. I’m not even a milk chocolate fan! Put a bowl of Hershey’s Kisses in front of me and I won’t touch them. But for some reason, I love these milk chocolate eggs! I usually only allow myself to buy one bag a season because these things are not safe around me. Note that I said I only allow MYSELF to buy one bag. Bags given to me by the Easter Bunny are totally fair game. And I’m pretty sure the Easter Bunny has a bag waiting for me 🙂

When I saw my favorite candy hit the shelves this year, I knew I wanted to bake it into something delicious! And I decided that brown butter blondies would be the perfect vehicle for these chocolate eggs. Browned butter has the most amazing flavor – and when you pair it with brown sugar, the results are just incredible – it tastes almost like caramel. Plus it contributes to a great texture – these blondies are so soft and chewy.

The eggs are big, so I chopped them up into pieces. The chocolate gets a little melty in the blondies and there is a nice crunch from the candy shell. These are delicious, and are a perfect treat to make for Easter. Or, take advantage of leftover candy and post-Easter sales and make these after Easter!

These soft and chewy blondies have the most amazing flavor thanks to brown butter. They are full of candy coated chocolate eggs, making them the perfect treat for Easter!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ t baking powder
  • ¼ t salt
  • ½ cup butter, browned
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 cup Hershey's Candy Coated Milk Chocolate Eggs, chopped (can sub chocolate chips)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8 inch square pan. If desired, line the pan with a long strip of foil, leaving the ends of the foil hanging over the edges - this will serve as a handle to remove the bars.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat together butter, brown sugar, and egg until well combined. Beat in the vanilla.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, and mix until combined. Fold in the chocolate eggs.
  5. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan, and press it into an even layer.
  6. Bake for 22 -25 minutes, until light golden brown, but still slightly under cooked in the center. Let cool completely in pan, then remove (using foil handles) and cut into pieces.

I try to hold back from buying holiday candy because I end up eating it all. But eventually I give in. 😉
I think these photos are beautiful, but I know that we are our own worst critics. One simply can’t go wrong wih blondies. They are the perfect bars to put almost anything in them and I love the festive theme today. 🙂

Cate, you would love a popular Easter treat we have in the UK called ‘Cadbury’s mini eggs’. They are just like the little eggs you put in your blondies and VERY diffficult to stop eating once you start.
I actually really like your photos in this post … especially the top one. 😉
