Does anyone else need a cocktail today? Because I could sure use one! This week seems to be never-ending! I blame the cold. It is March, and the “feels like” temperature is 5 degrees. 5. I walk to and from work everyday, so I get to spend 50 minutes outside in these lovely conditions. If I was back in South Bend, I would expect this kind of weather. But NYC isn’t supposed to be this cold! So…I need a cocktail!

One good thing about winter though is Blood Oranges! I love blood orange juice, and it tastes amazing in this blood orange gin fizz.

I really think there is no prettier fruit than the blood orange. Just look at those colors! Every time I cut into one I get kind of excited.

Blood Orange Gin Fizz | And blood orange juice tastes amazing in cocktails. It is slightly sweet and slightly tart, which adds such a nice depth of flavor to your drink. I know a gin fizz seems kind of summery, but the addition of blood orange juice makes this more seasonally appropriate. Plus, nothing wrong with pretending it is summer in the winter! Anything to take your mind off the 5 degree weather.

I love when cocktails have something on the rim.  It makes them look so pretty, and adds a little something special to the drink.  For this blood orange gin fizz, I took the zest of the blood orange and mixed it with some sugar.  It adds a little extra sweetness, and the orange color looks great with the bright pink/red cocktail!  I also like to garnish with some fresh mint, for a pop of green color.  Totally optional, as there is no mint in the actual drink, but it does look really pretty and adds a nice herbal minty aroma to the cocktail.

So get through the workday and then go home an make yourself a blood orange gin fizz – it tastes amazing, and the color will instantly put you in a good mood :)

Beautiful color! These cocktails certainly seem like a good way to beat the winter blues! Did you grow up in South Bend, or go to college there? My parents went to college there and still talk about the winters they experienced…brr!

Perfect post for a Friday, Cate! I could actually drink one about now, and it’s only 7.40 am. Is that really bad?! Yes, probably, shut up Helen. ANYway, it looks amazing. I’ve actually never made a cocktail at home so I’ve got some catching up to do. Plus I’ve been obsessed with blood oranges lately. I love cutting into them too … they’re almost scary!
