Brooklyn Blackout Donuts

March 12, 2016 by Cate 6 Comments

The ultimate baked chocolate donut, these Brooklyn Blackout Donuts are based off a popular breakfast treat from NYC’s Donut Plant.

I’ve mentioned this before, but one of the most concerning things to happen to me in the first trimester was not the constant nausea or fatigue…it was the loss of my sweet tooth! Honestly, desserts are one of my favorite things ever, so to just have no interest in eating anything sweet was the most bizarre thing ever. I wondered if it would be like that forever. And then one day, TheBetterHalf and I were in our local market, and something sweet actually sounded appealing to me…a Brooklyn Blackout Donut from the Donut Plant!!! It was like a light at the end of the first trimester tunnel.

Then for about 5 days in a row, I had to have that donut. Which was problematic when the store was out of it and I then had to go to every local coffee shop that serves Donut Plant donuts to find one…making me late for work…but it was totally necessary. After about the fifth day I decided that I probably shouldn’t be eating fried donuts every morning, so I thought it would be really fun to create a baked version! These are just as moist and chocolatey as the real thing, but are much lighter….

Burnt Sugar Almonds

December 17, 2014 by Cate 19 Comments

Burnt Sugar Almonds are the perfect blend of sweet and salty. They are so delicious – I can’t stop eating them! Plus, they will make your house smell amazing!

Burnt Sugar Almonds - perfect for a Food Gift this holiday season! | ChezCateyLou.com

There are 7 more shopping days until Christmas! Do you have everyone crossed off your list yet? If not (and even if you do!) I have a wonderful idea for a holiday gift – a gorgeous new cookbook! This book, Almonds: Recipes, History, Culture is full of gorgeous photos and tons of delicious recipes. It would be the perfect addition to any cook’s collection, and also makes a great coffee table book.

I love the idea of making something from a cookbook and then giving it as a gift with the book. I made Burnt Sugar Almonds from the Almonds book and wrapped them up in a cellophane bag tied with a pretty little ribbon. It makes such a cute and thoughtful gift, not to mention a delicious one!

Kentucky Buck Fifty Cocktail

November 18, 2014 by TheBetterHalf 5 Comments

A spicy twist on the classic Old Fashioned, the Kentucky Buck Fifty Cocktail is a fun way to spice up your next party. Based on a drink at The Raines Law Room in NYC.

New York is a great city if you like to eat. As you may have noticed, Cate and I try and take full advantage of this. But New York is also great if you like to drink. And while you can get a drink just about anywhere in New York (and at any hour, as bars don’t close until 4am), one of my favorite spots is Raines Law Room, a “speakeasy” cocktail bar just north of the West Village. My go-to cocktail at Raines Law Room is the Kentucky Buck Fifty, which is a spicy twist on an Old Fashioned. The secret to the heat is the addition of Cholula hot sauce.

Today I have a quick and easy recipe for a Kentucky Buck Fifty – so easy you can probably make it right now with ingredients already in your house (and if not, consider this a wake up – you should always have rye whiskey and hot sauce in your pantry, or else I’m not visiting).

Add some fall flavors to your morning bagel with Pumpkin Cream Cheese! It is so easy to make and tastes delicious – a simple way to make breakfast special!

Pumpkin Cream Cheese | ChezCateyLou.com

Welcome to day 4 of PUMPKIN WEEK! In case you missed my other posts, I have dedicated this week to all pumpkin recipes. Donuts and waffles and skinny bread – I can’t get enough pumpkin!

Today I’m taking a break from baking and making something super easy – Pumpkin Cream Cheese! This is the perfect thing to whip up if you want your breakfast to be special, but just don’t have the time to turn on the oven or make something complex. A little Pumpkin Cream Cheese on a store bought bagel is a great option for a fall breakfast treat that is delicious and impressive, but super easy!
